Confidence Booster Series: “Mindful Breathing”

This week’s confidence booster is inspired by a photo I took several years ago in Tofino, BC. The serene west coast scene serves as a powerful reminder for me to stay grounded in who I am and grateful for the many blessings in my life.

When I am grounded and focused on the good, I automatically feel better about myself and others around me.

For many of us (myself included), it isn’t always a simple task to switch off our thoughts and be fully present in the moment before us.

When I replay conversations, fears and past experiences over in my head, or when I spend too much time worrying about the future, I am not present or grounded. Instead, I find myself reliving feelings of the past or worrying too much about a future that may never happen.

Nine times out of ten, when I get caught in this cycle, I do not feel good about myself and I can become critical of others around me. Not a cycle I want to be caught in, that’s for sure.

I find it extremely helpful to ‘focus on breathing’, as a way of pulling out of these persistent and destructive thought patterns.

  • Take a deep intentional breath in.
  • Hold for the count of three.
  • And then focus on exhaling slowly.
  • Repeat this process until you find quiet space.

Having quiet ‘present’ space is helpful to regroup. I have found that it gives me the room to consciously redirect thoughts and feelings in a way that will ‘build me up’ instead of ‘break me down’.

I definitely recommend “Mindful Breathing” as a way to boost your mood and confidence. Give it a try.
