Deep, intentional breathing is a tool we all can choose to access to help combat stress and appreciate the moments before us. Sometimes it is as simple as reminding ourselves of the importance and benefits of deep intentional breathing that will bring it back into our awareness.
When we practice mindful breathing on a regular basis, with time it becomes more habitual to access our breath to help us move through our challenges and to embrace our joys.
One of my favourite times to access my breath is when I am getting ready to engage in a coaching conversation. I find that giving myself some time to breathe deeply before I meet with a client, helps me to get grounded and calm so that I can be truly present and able to give my undivided attention. Another time I like to use intentional breathing is when I am driving. If there is traffic and I feel frustrated or impatient, giving myself the gift of ‘controlled breaths in and slow exhales out’, makes all the difference in feeling a greater sense of ease. I also use mindful breathing to take in my surroundings in order to feel more joy. Sometimes this is when I am outside running, and sometimes it is when I am with my family and friends. I have found I can tap into this kind of breathing anytime I want to be present and feel a deep sense of gratitude.
Practicing intentional breathing in a way that is personally meaningful and helpful, is such a powerful way to connect to your truth and to feel the wonder of life moving through you.
Last week we officially started my E-Course, Fall in Love With Your Life, One Week at a Time, and the first weekly topic is on breath. I am enjoying the gift of deepening this practice and hearing the reflections of others who are also on this journey. This new experience is inspiring me to use my breath to take in more of the good stuff in the day, and exhale the rest without attaching to it. When might you access intentional breathing in your day? What kinds of reminders could you create for yourself to access your breath as a helpful tool?
