There is something to be said for spending time immersed in everyday, ordinary tasks. When we get lost in activities that are straightforward, it has a way of creating the space to recharge.
When we approach tasks like cooking, cleaning, organizing, yard work etc. as opportunities to find comfort and ease, it helps to melt away the dread or tension in feeling like there isn’t enough time to get everything done.
Another added bonus of embracing routine tasks, is intentionally activating our other senses. For example, when washing dishes you can focus on the feeling of the water on your hands and the aroma of the suds.
Through this heightened awareness, it becomes more natural to relax into being really present. I find that when I give myself the gift of an afternoon of preparing meals in the kitchen, without worrying about other things I feel I need to do, or pending deadlines etc., I feel refreshed and calm afterwards. I also end up with a fridge full of healthy food for our household, which not only feels good, it also gives me more time throughout the week to enjoy other things.
Give it a try and see what happens when you approach your daily routines as opportunities to find comfort in the gift of simplicity.
