Confidence Booster Series: Forward Thinking
“Big thinking precedes great achievement” – Wilferd Peterson
This concludes our year-long venture of confidence boosting ideas and practices. I have truly enjoyed this process and I’m really looking forward to the start of the New Year. The topic of ‘forward thinking’ or creating a vision seems like the ideal way to wrap up our year. I wish you all the very best for 2015! Thanks again for joining me on this journey. Having you be a part of it has meant the world to me.
I love the above quote by Wilferd Peterson. It is so true that great achievement starts with big thinking. I believe it also comes with clear thinking. Having a plan or road map that points in the general direction of where we most want to go is the first step to getting there.
When I was going to University one of the most powerful tools I learned, that I still use, is the art of creating ‘mind maps’ or ‘vision boards’. For anyone unfamiliar with what this is, it is basically utilizing your creativity to make a detailed plan of your goals. It could be on large poster board paper, or in a journal style format. I’ve also seen it created through animation or other forms of technology. The plan that is being mapped out could be for a particular project or venture. It could even be a plan for the ‘bigger picture’ of your dreams and hopes for the future. Vision boards provide a method of collecting, organizing and recording your thoughts and dreams in a powerful way.
Putting pen to paper and engaging our creative senses is a brilliant and important step in actualizing our dreams.
When making my vision boards, I love to use affirmations and bold statements that have personal meaning attached to them. These words are powerful as they provide me with reminders of what I’ve said is most important to me. I also add meaningful images and scenes that to someone else may look like magazine cut outs, but to me they create a distinct picture of where I am headed. These images and words are a product of my ‘forward thinking’. I display my vision board where I see it regularly and I commit to doing at least one thing each day that is in the direction of reaching these goals. I create a daily list that includes one of my bigger goals, broken down into consistent, smaller, manageable steps.
The best part about creating a clear vision is that it helps create awareness of what your deepest desires are. When opportunities that are in line with these dreams come up, it becomes much easier to recognize them and therefore seize them.
In our household, we create yearly vision boards. Our kids take part in the fun as well. My husband generally has very concrete goals and objectives on his. He creates a very clear vision of what he hopes to achieve over a year period and he commits to doing it. My vision boards tend to be full of colour and pictures. I include emotionally driven goals that clearly remind me of my BIG DREAMS I’m striving towards on a daily basis. The boys tend to draw pictures of their family and friends and have goals related to their sports.
My point is, vision boards are like art in that they are uniquely your creation. What you include on them will relate to ‘your’ specific dreams and goals. They provide such a great opportunity to start thinking thoughts that have you aiming high and DREAMING BIG! Include the things that frighten you the most, for these tend to be the places where our greatest dreams and passions reside.
The art of defining my dreams and setting out to reach them has been fundamental in becoming more confident and believing in myself.
It is so empowering to start out with a thought that becomes a goal, and then one day realize you’ve actually achieved what you once only thought about. I can’t help but use this insight as an important reminder to be ‘mindful of the thoughts we give life to’. We can either give life to thoughts that extinguish our dreams, or to the ones that help our dreams take flight. We owe it to ourselves and our global community to realize our potential and share our gifts by going after our dreams and passions. That is what creates ripple effects of positive change in the world!
I hope each and every one of you has the most amazing year. Create your ‘Clear Vision’ and ‘Dream Big’, you may be pleasantly surprised with your results at the end of the year.
Thank you again.
