Confidence Booster Series: Appreciating and Valuing Diversity
“People take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness. Just because they are not on your road does not mean they are lost.” –Dalai Lama
This week’s focus is to embrace the qualities that make each of us unique, while respecting the differences in others around us. It is so true that a world filled with nothing but the same would make for a very dull and uninspiring existence.
I believe we are all born with special gifts and traits, and when we embrace these traits wholeheartedly, we are helping to create collectively rich and diverse communities. Respecting and valuing one another whether or not we look, act or live the same way, feels so much better than being envious, spiteful or judgmental.
When we are confident in ourselves and embrace our uniqueness, the desire to compare ourselves to others begins to fade away. When we view ourselves with compassion and kindness, it becomes much more natural to genuinely value and appreciate others for their gifts.
There are many ways to live a happy and fulfilling life. Everyone’s view of what this looks like is so different and yet the ‘feeling’ of happiness, love and fulfillment is relatable because it is shared universally. How we travel on our quest to fulfillment is our own business. If we are being respectful and kind to others along our journey, it is nobody’s concern but our own as to what path we choose to take to get there. There are countless roads that will lead to the same feeling of contentment.
The opportunity exists at all times to witness the diversity around us, locally and globally. I believe it is different shades of fear that keep people stuck in believing that their way or view is the ‘right’ way or ‘only’ way to see and experience life. One of the main downsides of this limited mindset is the missed opportunity to see and experience life from different perspectives and wide ranges of colourful possibilities. We can learn and grow from others without having to adopt their way as our own.
It is easy to become inspired by others who are much different than we are when we appreciate that their gifts are equally as valuable as our own. It is liberating to see that we each play an important role in the creation of diversity. How we show up and the unique gifts we offer is what results in a beautiful and eclectic world.
So this week, make a list of the unique traits that you most admire about yourself. Keep your list visible to serve as a daily reminder of what makes you special. Allow the words on the page to sink in and fill you up so you can clearly see and accept yourself ‘just the way you are’. When we accept ourselves, we are more apt to notice and appreciate the things about other people that make them unique and different than we are. When we value ourselves, we are more open to learn about new and exciting ways of seeing and experiencing life.
