Confidence Booster Series: A Little Humour Goes A Long Way
“From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere.” – Dr. Seuss
This week’s focus is to find comfort in the ‘funny side’ of life. There are endless opportunities to experience humour at any given moment during the day. I have always enjoyed the best times when I let go of worrying what others may think, and instead loosen up and allow my more playful, goofy side to take the lead. It’s amazing the fun times that can be had when we don’t take ourselves so seriously all the time.
Children’s first reaction is usually to see the funny side of just about everything. To them, all words, sights, sounds and smells provide the perfect springboard to giggle, be present and fully enjoy the moment before them. It is with time, unrealistic expectations and disappointments that we often lose this ‘level’ of sense of humour and playfulness.
Life can become uncertain and fears can very quickly overtake lightness. While that all sounds a bit doom and gloom, there is a definite upside. I believe the more confident we are in ourselves, the less likely we are to take ourselves so seriously. When we approach life grounded in who we are, it becomes natural again to engage in ‘child’s play’ and ‘see’ the funny things all around us.
I was recently at a wedding where they had a photo booth complete with creative props to showcase your fun side. It was an absolute hit! I had the best time playing dress up with my friends. The above photo shows the level of fun and silliness we enjoyed together. Everyone young and old, took turns dressing up and capturing these goofy moments on film. The room was filled with roars of laughter as everyone put their egos aside and allowed their silly side to come out.
It is funny how dress up, and child’s play is something we can easily revert back to when the conditions feel right. I believe we are meant to experience this lightness and joy all throughout our lives, it was never meant to end in childhood.
While we may not go around laughing at everything before us (though that would be really fun), we can certainly seize daily opportunities to enjoy a good laugh and use humour to create balance in our lives.
I love this William Arthur Ward quote that speaks to the importance of humour in our lives:
“A well-developed sense of humor is the pole that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life.”
So on that note, this week surround yourself with people and environments that encourage you to laugh and feel light. If you find yourself feeling low or focused on the dark side of a situation, see if you can use humour to lift your mood. If you aren’t able to connect with a great friend who is sure to make you laugh, instead watch a funny video or read a humour blog or article. The world is filled with talented people whose gift is to bring laughter and light to those who need it most. Look for the resources and enjoy some comic relief. If you can, get together with friends who will encourage you to see the funny things around us, they are everywhere. See you in the funnies!
