Confidence Booster Series: The Gift of Giving
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill
If you’ve ever had someone give you a genuine compliment, or do something unexpected and kind, then you can relate to the powerful effect this type of act can have on your outlook and mood.
On the flip side, if you’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing someone’s eyes brighten and smile grow because of kind words or gestures you’ve given them, you also know of the wonderful feeling this can bestow upon you ‘the giver’.
The gift of giving doesn’t have to be extravagant or over the top. I don’t believe it’s something we should sacrifice ourselves for either. Rather, it’s an exchange between people that leaves both the giver and receiver feeling good. For the giver, it’s sharing the sense that “I see you and you are important and great the way you are.” For the receiver, it’s being gifted the feeling that “Wow, I feel seen and I really do matter.”
These exchanges can be met through something as straightforward as giving a heartfelt smile to strangers you pass by out in the world. It could be giving the gift of your undivided attention to loved ones. Putting away cell phones and other forms of distraction while we are out in the world with others, creates opportunities to connect and notice the people who are around us. You could give an unexpected helping hand to a friend, or write them a card expressing the many things you admire about them. There is an infinite number of ways we can spread joy and give to others, it’s really yours by design.
This week have some fun interacting with others. Give the gift of your attention and spread your kindness around. It’s such an amazing feeling to witness the spark in another as a direct result of receiving you and your gift.
