Confidence Booster Series: Give it a Try
“It’s impossible,” said pride.
“It’s risky,” said experience.
“It’s pointless,” said reason.
“Give it a try,” whispered the heart.
This week’s focus is to move past all of the reasons why we shouldn’t put ourselves out there, and instead face our fears and try anyway. This is much easier said than done as we are often programmed to live within the boundaries of our comfort zone.
I have found that the times I muster up the courage to put myself out there, especially when I feel uncomfortable and would much rather hide, I end up feeling more self-assured no matter what the outcome is. It’s equally true that the times I stay comfortable and complacent and choose not to give things a shot, I end up feeling deflated because I always wonder what could be if I had just been brave enough to take a chance.
I believe this mindset can apply to many areas in life. It could be in career, relationships, health, fitness, travel etc. If you look at many professional athletes or people who have succeeded in an area you wish to have more success in, they will often tell you that they had to take risks and put themselves out there knowing they could fail. These brave individuals will also share that they often failed many times before they succeeded, but the journey made them stronger and they couldn’t imagine it any other way.
I believe we need to shoot to score, and we will never know if we can succeed at something if we don’t at least give it a try. I often feel apprehensive to submit my writing and work, but I have learned that my self-worth is not tied to the outcome. Basically two things can happen, it will either be accepted or it will be turned down. The absolute worst thing that can happen is someone will say no, or that it isn’t a right fit.
If we know we can handle the worst-case scenario and that it isn’t the end of the world, the question then becomes: “Why not put yourself out there?” If there is a chance you will move closer to your dreams, whatever they may be, that in itself is worth giving it a shot.
This week have some fun extending your boundaries and practice the art of putting yourself and your dreams out there. Give yourself permission to be bold and take a courageous step towards your dreams, no matter how big or small. Each time you do, it becomes easier to take the initial step the next time. You never know what the outcome could be, you are worth giving it a try.
