Confidence Booster Series: Count Your Blessings
“Don’t stay in the dark and count your woes. Step into the light and count your blessings.” – Sandra Kring
This week’s focus is to begin each day consciously thinking about what is already going well in your life. Better yet, give yourself the gift of a few minutes to write these thoughts down in order to allow all that good stuff to really sink in.
It is easy to get swallowed by worries and stories we have about what isn’t going well or what hasn’t worked out in life thus far. Worrying about the future or obsessing about the past ruins the moment and opportunity to feel good with the world before us. The truth is, we only ever really have the moment we are in ‘right now’ so why not experience it in the best light.
I believe there is huge power in the mindset we choose to adopt. Life plays out before us and the background noise that is involved will inevitably influence our thoughts. No matter what noise we may be immersed in, each of us has the last say and ultimate control over the direction and theme of our thoughts. When we pay close attention and focus on our thoughts, we can redirect them to have a positive influence on our mood, self-esteem and outlook on the road ahead.
One of the simplest and most powerful ways of redirecting our thoughts in a positive way, is to literally count our blessings and focus on everything that is already good. Our blessings do not have to be extravagant or life-sized. It can be as simple as the fact that we are alive and breathing in air at the moment. It could be enjoying our surroundings and feeling gratitude for the natural beauty that is all around us at any given moment. When we spend a bit of time feeling thankful for our friends, family, loved ones, young ones, pets etc. we in turn receive the gift of a brighter mindset.
The most important thing to remind ourselves is that things are never as drab or dreary as they may sometimes appear to be. At any given moment, we can hit the pause button and take a little break from the thoughts that create worry and insecurity. Sometimes all it takes is giving ourselves this breathing room to see that there is a different way we can experience life that feels good and results in our happiness.
So this week, as you start your day see how it feels when you literally count your blessings before you do anything else. During the course of the day, If you feel yourself getting caught up in stories and thoughts that don’t feel good, see what happens when you give yourself a little mental break to take stock of the things that you are grateful for. This simple yet powerful act has the potential to shift your whole day.
