Confidence Booster Series: Allow
“As for the future, your task is not to foresee it but to enable it.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Years ago, a dear friend of mine gave me some great advice, Don’t Push the River, she said. This feedback was in response to my incessant desire to achieve results quicker than they were happening. I’ve drawn on this wisdom many times since, for a variety of reasons. This week’s focus is inspired by this wonderful piece of advice.
It can be rather enticing to want to speed things up in the direction of our hopes, goals and dreams. However, sometimes meddling with the process actually sabotages the end result we were aiming to achieve.
Stop and think about the strain, stress and effort of constantly feeling the need to ‘push’ against the current of a river. Then compare that with how much more fluid and natural it is if we let go and travel with the flow of a river. From this viewpoint, it seems to be a much more desirable option to ‘allow’ the natural process of life events to unfold as they will.
I believe the act of ‘going with the current’ enables our dreams and goals to come together when the timing is right. Of course, this doesn’t mean putting in zero effort and having the unrealistic expectation that things will just magically happen for us. Instead, I think that when we take consistent and necessary steps toward our goals, there is a grace period where we need to ‘allow’ the results of our efforts to occur.
When we become frustrated and impatient with the speed at which things are happening in our lives, we are no longer open to ‘seeing’ opportunities as they present themselves. So often, ‘how’ things unfold can be very different than we expected, but the end result can be even better than we imagined. We can’t possibly predict the future and control every aspect of that. Pretending that we can is an exhausting undertaking that can eventually undermine our self-confidence.
While it can be scary to just let go and allow the chips to fall where they may, it can also be a very empowering experience to put in our best effort and then trust things will indeed work out for the best.
This week practice the art of going with the flow a little more and resist the temptation to push quite so hard when things aren’t unfolding the way you hoped. Put a little space and time into the equation and instead of trying to micro-manage and steer things in a certain direction, look at it from the viewpoint that you are ‘allowing’ things to turn out for the best.
